Gene Wilder stars as Rabbi Avram Belinski, newly arrived from Poland, who must travel through the Wild West from Philadelphia to San Francisco to lead a congregation.  On the way, he meets outlaw Tommy Lillard, played by Harrison Ford, who protects Belinski through a series of adventures as they make their way to the west coast.
